Keep Health Insurance Accessible for Americans Aged 50 and Higher - The Petition Site
Keep Health Insurance Accessible for Americans Aged 50 and Higher - The Petition Site
With our current system, insurance companies can charge more as patients get older. And while a slight increase makes sense to cover costs, these increases can be as much as ten times the amount charged for younger patients. Not only that, but if an older adult has a preexisting medical condition, some insurance companies can reject them altogether.
An AARP study found that 7.1 million people ages 50 to 64 are uninsured, a 36 percent increase since 2000. This is an unacceptable number, especially when this generation is in the most need of medical help.
The health care reform bill being debated in Congress has the ability to fix this problem. Under the House bill, insurers would be able to charge older people no more than twice as much as they charge younger customers. The Senate proposals set a higher limit of three to one. But both the House and Senate plans would prevent insurers from denying coverage for preexisting conditions and from charging higher premiums based on health or gender.
We cannot burden older Americans with the worst insurance premiums. Please tell Congress to maintain this limited age ratio of at least three to one, so we can all have access to affordable insurance and properly take care of our elders.

Tell Your Senators: Make Our Food Safe! - The Petition Site
Every year, 76 million Americans are sickened and 325,000 are hospitalized from consuming contaminated food -- and 5,000 of these people die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our food safety law clearly is not up to the task. Unbelievably, the Food and Drug Administration only inspects food factories on average once every 10 years, checks less than 1 percent of food shipments imported from China and other foreign countries and doesn't even have the authority to force food companies to recall contaminated foods.
Continued outbreaks of food contamination over the last several years -- from spinach to peppers to peanuts -- have demonstrated that these outbreaks are not random, unpreventable occurrences, but are due to widespread problems with our food safety system.
Our current food system is broken and in need of reform. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed bipartisan food safety reform legislation in July 2009 that would update the law and strengthen the system: Now the Senate must act. Your Senators have the opportunity to change course and help protect children, families, senior citizens and all others from foodborne illness.
Tell your Senators it is time to pass strong food safety legislation now!

Federal land throughout the American West is home to thousands of healthy wild horses. Yet as herds continue to grow, Bureau of Land Management officials continue to trap hundreds of wild horses – condemning many of them to live the rest of their lives in holding pens.
Recently, the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act -- a bill working to protect wild horses. The ROAM Act would step up fertility control measures, encourage more adoptions and provide as much as 19 million additional acres for the wild animals to roam.
Take action to help our nation's wild mustangs – urge your Senators to support the ROAM Act to protect America's wild horses and burros.

n December 4, 1867 in a small Washington, DC building that housed the office of William Saunders, Superintendent of Propagating Gardens in the Department of Agriculture, the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, more commonly known as the Grange, was born. Here, sitting around a plain wooden table, a group of seven earnest men, planned what was destined to become a vital force in preserving and expanding American democracy. They were all men of vision-they had faith in God, in their fellow man and the future. The Seven Founders of the Order of the Patrons of Husbandry were:
Oliver H. Kelley • William Saunders
Aaron B. Grosh • William M. Ireland
John R. Thompson • Francis McDowell
John Trimble (Assisted by Caroline Hall)
Their names are inscribed on a Birthplace Marker located near the site of the original building on the south side of 4th Street SW, near Madison Street on the mall in Washington DC The marker was officially dedicated on September 9, 1951 and is the only private monument on the mall.

Stop the Torture and Consumption of Dogs in Korea - The Petition Site
Stop the Torture and Consumption of Dogs in Korea - The Petition Site
Every year approximately TWO MILLION dogs are inhumanely caged, tortured and used for food in Korea! The dogs are crammed like vegetables into crates. When a customer makes a selection, the dogs are roughly yanked from the cage and intentionally abused before being slaughtered for the sale.
We are calling upon the Korean government to:
* enforce the existing law under the Korean Animal Protection Act, and
* to strengthen the existing law by amending it to unequivocally state that dogs and cats shall not be slaughtered for human consumption.
This practice of killing and eating dogs is not because of some long-standing cultural tradition. In fact, most Koreans find the cruelty and killing appalling. Yet it continues because it is backed by government indifference and because profit-driven industry forces aggressively promote the myth that eating severely mistreated dogs increases sexual potency.
Now is the time to stop this inhumane practice. Please join IDA and our Korean colleagues by signing this petition urging the Korean government to strengthen and enforce animal protection laws so that these cruelties can be brought to an end!

Keep Hospital Patients Safe From Infections - The Petition Site
It's common sense. Patients shouldn't have to pay to treat infections they got while in the hospital. Even Congress agrees -- the health care reform bills passed in the House and Senate would prohibit these payments.
Moreover, as written, health reform would require hospitals to report their infection rates, so patients have the information they need to choose the best, safest hospital for surgery, illness or childbirth. Changes like these have been successful in 27 states. It's past time to extend these safety incentives to every hospital in every community.
Please sign our petition to help make sure these common-sense changes survive the health care reform battle.
Nearly 100,000 people die every year from hospital-acquired infections. That's the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of people falling from the sky every other day. If jets started to crash like that, the federal response would be swift and strong. We should now expect any less here.

Payment Cuts for Medicare Physicians are Bad News for Older Americans - The Petition Site
Payment Cuts for Medicare Physicians are Bad News for Older Americans - The Petition Site
On March 1, 2010, physicians face a minimum across-the-board cut of 21 percent in Medicare payments. This cut will grow to about 40 percent in cumulative cuts by 2016 unless Congress permanently reforms Medicare's physician payment system.
These cuts and low payments will limit older Americans' access to health care. How? Some doctors have said the cuts will force them to decrease or stop seeing new Medicare patients. Which means older people may be forced to travel further for needed medical care, or even go to emergency facilities instead of a doctor's office for basic care!
Furthermore, these cuts may stop physicians from purchasing health information technology. The Medicare physician payment system needs to keep up with rising practice costs so that seniors can be assured of continued access to quality care.
Urge Congress not to settle for another temporary fix -- health system reform must include Medicare reform and we need a permanent solution now. America deserves nothing less!

Take GM Corn off the Shelves! - The Petition Site
As Monsanto prepares to unleash its latest Genetically-Modified (GM) corn supercrop, the International Journal of Biological Sciences has revealed the true cost of these crops.
The study focused on three GM corn crops -- Mon 863, Mon 801 and NK 603 -- and found that they caused statistically significant rates of kidney and liver malfunction, as well as some heart, adrenal, spleen and blood damage in rats. These crops have been approved for consumption in the U.S. and many countries in Europe without proper research into their affect on human health.
GM technology inserts non-food genes into the DNA of food, sometimes making the crop more resilient to herbicides and other times causing them to produce toxic proteins that act as pesticides themselves. This process changes the structure of the food drasticcally and presents humans with substances that have never been a part of the human or animal diet.
Several countries in Europe, such as Germany and France, have already banned GM crops, including Mon 801. But the U.S. FDA has done us a potentially dangerous disservice by simply taking Monsanto's word that these genetically modified crops are safe and not doing any testing! This 90-day study was just the beginning, and these GM crops must be studied further instead of being immediately available for human consumption.
Tell the FDA to take these genetically modified corn varieties off the shelves until a peer-reviewed, two-year study can determine if they are safe for human consumption!

Household Chemicals Affect Fertility - More Testing Now! - The Petition Site
A UC Berkeley study released in late January, 2010 revealed that common household chemicals can reduce a woman's fertility.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame-retardants that are found in sofas, fabrics, plastics and electronics, and are present in 97 percent of Americans. This study showed that of the 223 women monitored, the women with high levels of PBDEs were were between 30 and 50 percent less likely to conceive in a month's time!
Two types of PBDEs have been phased out by the EPA and the one still in use is set to be phased out beginning in 2013. But not only do these chemicals remain in our homes for many years, but the new chemicals that are replacing these flame-retardants are just as unknown and untested as PBDEs when they were first used.
We cannot continue this dangerous cycle of toxicity! Tell the EPA to properly test chemicals before allowing them into our homes.

Coal Ash is Hazardous Waste and Must Be Regulated Now - The Petition Site
Coal ash is one of our nation's most common waste products. Nearly 600 coal ash ponds in 35 states and hundreds of landfills hold enough coal ash to flow continuously over Niagara Falls for more than three days straight.
Last year, a coal ash pond in Tennessee burst through a poorly constructed dam, sending 1 billion gallons of toxic ash over 300 acres. The spill damaged homes and poisoned rivers and water supplies. Yet right now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says they are at least 48 other coal ash sites that could pose a similar threat of catastrophic collapse!
Despite the known threat to our health and environment, coal ash dumps remain unregulated by the EPA -- and coal and power industry lobbyists are using all their might to misinform and misguide federal regulators.
Fortunately, we have the opportunity to finally regulate one of our nation's biggest toxic threats. Urge President Obama to regulate coal ash as a hazardous waste and use the full extent of the law to protect our health and environment.

Tell the USDA to Raise the Standards for the Organic Label - The Petition Site
When you see food labeled 'USDA Organic', you might picture rows of colorful pesticide-free crops, with bees buzzing and birds chirping around an idillic plot of pure land.
But the food we buy labeled USDA Organic is not always as pure as we imagine.
According to USDA standards, food can be labeled oraganic even if the grower uses pesticides that, although made from organic substances, may still be as harmful to the environment as synthetic pesticides. A food can be labeled 'USDA Organic' even if it contains toxic additives that don't need to be shown on ingredients labels.
USDA Organic doesn't mean natural, nutritious, or in harmony with the environment. Consumers should be able to trust food labels administered by the government, and know exactly what they are buying. Tell the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to adhere to stricter standards when labeling food 'USDA Organic'.
